The Roadrunners overcame a last-minute venue change due to weather in San Bernardino and turned it into a perfect opportunity to showcase their resilience. College of the Desert (9-3; 2-0) captured their second extra-inning walk-off win of the season, edging the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines (4-10; 0-2), 7-6. With the victory, COD extends its winning streak over SBVC to five games.
Sophomore second baseman Malakai Lopez (Rancho Mirage H.S.) was the hero, delivering the game-winning hit in the bottom of the 10th inning. Lopez went 2-for-4, scored twice, and drove in two runs while batting leadoff.
In the heart of the lineup, sophomore designated hitter Isaiah Martin (Beaumont H.S.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI for his second multi-hit game of the season, while freshman first baseman Noah Arreola (West Covina H.S.), hitting fifth, also went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore third baseman Jayvin Baxa (La Quinta H.S.), batting seventh, scored the game-winning run in the 10th and finished 2-for-5 with two runs. Out of the ninth spot, sophomore center fielder Derrick Thompson (Randallstown {MD} H.S.) was a perfect 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI, marking his third multi-hit game of the season.
On the mound, freshman right-handed starter Javier Vasquez (La Quinta H.S.) was dominant, tossing 8 innings, striking out 9, and walking only 2. Freshman left-handed reliever Henry Wallin (Perris Orange Vista) overcame a rough start but locked down the final two innings to secure his first win of the season.
COD returns home on Thursday, February 26 at 2:00 p.m. to host the Cerro Coso Coyotes of Ridgecrest, continuing their Inland Empire Athletic Conference schedule.
