The Roadrunners (0-2-1) earned their first result of the season, playing to a hard-fought 2-2 draw against the San Diego City Knights (0-1-1) in their second home match of the year at Shadow Hills High School in Indio.
COD struck first in the 23rd minute, when sophomore midfielder Hector Baltierra (La Quinta H.S.) netted his second goal of the season off a perfect cross from sophomore midfielder Destry Lanza (Beaumont H.S.), giving Desert a 1-0 advantage. But with just 14 seconds left in the first half, the Knights capitalized to even the score at 1-1 going into the break.
The Roadrunners regained control in the 75th minute as freshman forward Jonathan Price (La Quinta H.S.) buried his first career goal, set up by a strong assist from freshman defender Sergio Gomez-Bustos (Indio Shadow Hills). The lead was short-lived, however, as San Diego City answered less than two minutes later to bring the game level at 2-2, where it would remain.
Freshman goalkeeper Andrew Marquez (Beaumont H.S.) had a standout performance in net, recording 10 saves to preserve the draw.
The Roadrunners now hit the road for their next four matches before returning home on Tuesday, September 23 at 4 p.m. to face the Imperial Valley Desert Warriors at Xavier College Prep in Palm Desert.
