COD Softball grabs first win of 2019 over winless Wolverines, 11-5

COD (1-1) had to side step some scheduling issues and ended up playing a Conference foe in the second game of the season, but that didn't keep the Roadrunners from rolling over the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines (0-6), 11-5.

Desert would pounce early with a three run spot in the bottom of the first, taking the early lead, 3-1. The Wolverines would add three more runs to their total in the top of the third, taking a 4-3 lead, but Desert would come roaring back with three more runs in the bottom of the third to regain the lead, 6-4.

While San Bernardino Valley would add a run in the top of the fourth, the Roadrunners would plate three more runs in the fourth, a run in the fifth and a run in the sixth to take the afternoon contest.

Leading the way for the Roadrunners was freshman catcher Natalie Avila (Rancho Mirage H.S.), who went 3 for 3 with three runs scored and four runs batted in, commenting after the game, "I just saw an opportunity to bounce on them, so I did and anything I looked for, I got it."

Avila also caught a good game behind the plate for sophomore right handed starting pitcher Areli Moreno (Indio H.S.), where she stated, "The umpire was very hard to know what signs he wanted to get, but (Moreno) did great, I tried to help her out the best I could and it showed, hopefully."

Freshman left fielder Carmina Camarena (Rancho Mirage H.S.) also had a good day at the plate, going 3 for 4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in, commenting about the Wolverines pitching, "It was all down the middle, easy to hit, just put the ball in play."

Camarena, playing in right field, saw a great deal of action, due to the amount of right handed batters in the San Bernardino Valley lineup, stating that most of their at bats were, "Easy, easy routine plays, there was one that hit off the fence, but we went right after it and we got it done, got the job done."

Freshman third baseman Lauren Robinson (La Quinta H.S.) did well, going 3 for 4 with two runs scored and sophomore center fielder and leadoff hitter, Briana Alcorn (Indio H.S.), went 2 for 4, also with two runs scored.

Freshman short stop Jacqueline Bolha (Yucca Valley H.S.) went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and freshman second baseman Giselle Maldonado (Rancho Mirage H.S.) went 2 for 4 on the afternoon.
