COD (4-0) remained undefeated as they hosted their 2025 home opener, sweeping the double header over the Taft Cougars (0-3), 11-10 and 10-4.
In game one, Desert had to go extras to grab the win, scoring two runs in the 7th to tie the game at 8-8 and using "international tiebreaker" throughout the rest of extras. The back-and-forth ended in the 9th when the Roadrunners scored twice to win the game.
Sophomore right-handed starting pitcher Victoria Talamantes (La Quinta H.S.) went 4 innings, scattering 5 runs, all earned, on 5 hits, walking 2 and striking out 3. Sophomore right-handed relief pitcher Arissa Gonzalez (Thermal Coachella Valley) would toss one of the best games of her career, striking out 7 over the remaining 5 innings for her first win of the season. Freshman second baseman Mia Villalobos (Thermal Coachella Valley) would go 1 for 5 with 2 runs scored out of the leadoff spot. Freshman right fielder Alyssa Sanchez (La Quinta H.S.) would go 2 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 2 runs batted in out of the 3-hole. In game two, once again, the Roadrunners had to come from behind, but a big 8-run 5th inning sealed the win as Taft had to depart the game early due to transportation issues, even though the game was well in hand.
