COD Women’s Soccer takes #5 team in the nation to the brink, ties Wolverines, 1-1
COD (7-7-3; 2-3-1) played their best 90 minutes of soccer against one of the best teams in the nation, as they held a one goal lead until the final 90 seconds, still salvaging a hard fought tie against the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines (15-1-1; 5-0-1), 1-1.
Sophomore starting goal keeper Britney Vargas (La Quinta H.S.) added 19 more saves to her already impressive 2016 campaign, starting the afternoon as the #3 ranked goalie in California, now totaling 146 saves.
In the 51st minute, freshman midfielder Melita Pena (La Quinta H.S.) and freshman defender Tiana Kubitz (Cathedral City H.S.) fed a ball straight to freshman forward Natalie Navarro (Indio Shadow Hills) who found a seam and rifled a shot past the Wolverines keeper to give Desert a glance at the improbable. Navarro, who had been on the injured reserve list since the last contest at San Bernardino Valley on September 20th, returned to action for the Roadrunners in a big way with the goal.
Desert held that 1-0 lead on the Wolverines until 90 seconds left in regulation, when San Bernardino Valley tied the game on a break-away shot. Both teams left every bit of effort on the field, as they met a wall of pure exhaustion at the handshake line after the game.
The Roadrunners would be limited to only six shots total on the afternoon and only three shots on goal, but only one was needed to pull off the miraculous tie. The last time Desert tied a game against San Bernardino Valley was during the 2003 season, where the score was a 0-0 draw, back when both teams were still in the Foothill Conference.
The next home game for COD is Sophomore Day when they continue Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play hosting old Foothill Conference rival Mt. San Jacinto, on Friday, November 4, game starts at 3 p.m.
