COD Women’s Soccer knocks off Wolverines for first time since ’04, 2-1

COD (8-3; 4-0) remained undefeated in Conference play, as they slayed a huge giant, a team they had not defeated in 17 years, perennial Conference Champ, the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines (5-5-1; 1-3), 2-1.

The Roadrunners grabbed their 6th straight win, playing their final home game for 19 days as they have the next five games on the road.

Desert would get onto the scoreboard first, as sophomore defender Anaya Guerrero (La Quinta H.S.) took a free kick from about 70 yards out and dropped it right in front of sophomore forward Jasmine Castillo (Indio Shadow Hills) for her 10th goal of the season, giving the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead.

With 8:01 left in the first half, San Bernardino Valley had their best chance to score, a shot attempt was drilled in front of the net, but it bonked off of the post. Retaining the Roadrunners 1-0 lead.

While both offenses were firing shots at each other in the first half, Desert (17/SOG 3) and the Wolverines (12/SOG 6), their defenses were just as stout in response, as both teams would go into halftime with the Roadrunners holding onto a 1-0 advantage.

In the 70th minute, Desert would add some insurance as sophomore midfielder Ashley Murguia (Indio H.S.) lobbed a corner kick from the right side and found the head of sophomore midfielder Isabel Alvarez (Indio Shadow Hills), who promptly put a shot on net, which rebounded to Castillo for her 11th goal of the season, giving the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead.

San Bernardino Valley would break through in the 88th minute, but even with nearly 6 minutes of extra time, could not equalize.

Freshman goal keeper Jessica Uribe (Indio Shadow Hills) and the defense in front of her, had another very good effort, coming up a few minutes short of another clean sheet, but still getting a victory 17 years in the making.

The Roadrunners played the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines for the first time in program history in 1998, when SBVC was known as the Indians, and are now 11-28-5 all-time against San Bernardino Valley. Desert has an 8-14-3 record against SBVC in Palm Desert.

The next game for Desert is on Tuesday, October 12th at the Cerro Coso Coyotes of Ridgecrest. The Roadrunners first played Cerro Coso in 1997 and have an 6-0 record against the Coyotes, including 3-0 record in Ridgecrest. The next home game for Desert is on Friday, October 27th against the San Diego Miramar Jets. The Roadrunners first played San Diego Miramar in 2008 and have an 2-7-1 record against the Jets, including 1-3 record in Palm Desert.  The last time Desert defeated the Jets was in 2018, by a score of 1-0 in Palm Desert.
