Guerzize, Yamada Team Up to Win State Title in Doubles
OJAI, Calif. -- College of the Desert women's tennis earned a state title in doubles this past weekend, as freshman Linda Guerzize (CNED, FR) teamed up with sophomore Yu Yamada (Yamamotogakuen, JP) to earn a 7-6, 5-7, 10-7 victory in the super tiebreaker over the fourth-ranked doubles team from De Anza.
OJAI, Calif. -- College of the Desert women's tennis earned a state title in doubles this past weekend, as freshman Linda Guerzize (CNED, FR) teamed up with sophomore Yu Yamada (Yamamotogakuen, JP) to earn a 7-6, 5-7, 10-7 victory in the super tiebreaker over the fourth-ranked doubles team from De Anza.
Ranked as the number-two doubles pairing, Guerzize and Yamada rallied to upset the top-seeded duo in the semi-finals, 2-6, 7-5, 10-7. The pair cruised through their first matches of the tournament, earning back-to-back 6-0, 6-0 wins before picking up a 6-1, 7-5 victory in their third match. Then, for the right to move on to the semi-finals, Guerzize and Yamada fought back to earn a thrilling 6-1, 4-6, 10-8 win.
The Lady Roadrunners also sent two more duos into the doubles tournament, with freshman Lauren Joy (Palm Desert, CA) teaming up with freshman Diana Cole (Sheridan, WY) to earn a 6-0, 6-0 win before falling in the second round. Sophomore Karen Rodas (Palm Springs, CA) and freshman Miyako Kinoshita (La Quinta, CA) were the third pair in the tournament for COD, dropping their opening match, 6-4, 6-2.
Guerzize and Yamada, along with Joy, also participated in the singles competition. Guerzize picked up a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins before bowing out in her third match, while Yamada finished 1-1 including a 6-3, 6-1 win. Joy also earned a 1-1 mark, picking up a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
