COD Women’s Tennis Opens Conference Play with 9–0 Sweep of Southwestern

The College of the Desert women's tennis team opened Pacific Coast Athletic Conference (PCAC) play in dominant fashion, sweeping Southwestern, 9–0, in a rescheduled road match.

The Roadrunners (3-2, 1-0 PCAC) made the trip to Chula Vista for their conference opener against the Apaches (0-5) and delivered a complete performance from start to finish. The matchup also marked the first time since the 2019 season that both programs have competed in the same conference.

Doubles Domination

COD set the tone early in doubles competition.

At No. 1 doubles, freshmen Sophie Cordova (Palm Desert HS) and Lindsey Lopez (Downers Grove North HS, IL) were sharp and aggressive, cruising to an 8-1 victory.

The No. 2 team of sophomore Mia Castillo (Indio HS) and freshman Sofia Campbell (Cabrillo Point Academy, El Cajon) battled in the most competitive doubles match of the afternoon but pulled away for a strong 8-4 win.

At No. 3 doubles, sophomores Liliana Ruiz (Coachella Valley HS) and Oriana Ramirez (Indio HS) controlled play throughout, securing an 8-1 decision to complete the doubles sweep.

Straight-Set Success in Singles

Carrying momentum into singles, the Roadrunners left no doubt. All six COD players won in straight sets, sealing the 9-0 shutout and an impressive start to conference competition.

With the win, COD improves to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in PCAC play.

Up Next

The Roadrunners continue conference action on Tuesday, February 24, when they travel to San Jacinto to face Mt. San Jacinto. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
