The College of the Desert Women's Volleyball team capped off an unforgettable regular season by clinching their ninth Conference Championship in program history, and doing it in dominant fashion on Sophomore Night.
The Roadrunners (21-4, 9-0) closed out their regular-season home schedule undefeated at 9-0, never dropping a single set on their home court all year. Friday night's 3-0 sweep over the Chaffey Panthers of Rancho Cucamonga (2-17, 0-10), by scores of 25-16, 25-19, 25-17, marked COD's 15th sweep of the season and 13th consecutive victory.
The win also set a new program record for single-season victories with 21, underscoring a remarkable run of consistency and team chemistry. COD has now won 10 straight matches against Chaffey and 12 of the last 13 overall, a streak stretching back to before the COVID-19 pandemic. The last five meetings between the two programs have all ended in COD sweeps.
Freshman Faiyth Robinson (Desert Christian Academy) paced the attack with 15 assists and 8 digs, while sophomore setter Brianna Fabian (Indio H.S.) set a new career high with 12 assists, adding 2 service aces and 4 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Clairie Thomas (La Quinta H.S.) led the offense with 19 kills, while also contributing 4 aces and 4 digs. Freshman libero Meriah Escobedo (Xavier College Prep) added a spark from the service line with a season-high 4 aces, all in a row, during the third set.
Sophomore middle blocker Madyson Duran (Rancho Mirage H.S.) recorded a career-best 4 digs, alongside 2 kills and 3 assisted blocks, while sophomore Natalie Fabian (Indio H.S.) tallied a season-high 2 aces. Freshman Leslie Delgado (Coachella Valley) added 4 kills and 3 digs, and Sara Hanley (Xavier College Prep) chipped in 3 kills and 3 assisted blocks. Rounding out the effort, Jackie Leon (La Quinta H.S.) tallied 4 kills, and Amber Kardol (Palm Desert H.S.) contributed 2 kills and 5 digs.
With two matches remaining, a non-conference make-up at Ventura (13-9; WSC-N 6-5) on November 10 and a regular-season finale at San Bernardino Valley on November 14, the Roadrunners are now setting their sights on postseason play.
Playoff seedings will be announced on November 18, with the exciting possibility that COD could host its first-ever home playoff match on November 22.
